Christian Teaching and Discipleship
We believe in the importance of meeting children's spiritual
needs, as well as other more tangible needs. To this end we ensure that all
children who are in the project at any stage receive Bible teaching that is
relevant to their age group and life experience. For the first two weeks of each
school holiday period we also run a Holiday Bible Club. Here the children are
exposed to teaching on a particular theme or themes, with an opportunity on the
last day to give a presentation to their parents. And in August we run Bible
Holiday Camps, where we take children out of Kibera to stay at a boarding school
for five days. This experience is a highlight of the year for these children,
and is generously enabled by the support of individuals 'sponsoring' a child to
attend.
Holiday Clubs and Camps:
In the Christmas and Easters school holidays we run Bible Holiday
Clubs. Through drama, craft, teaching, and games the children learn more of the
love that Jesus has for each one of them, and the way He wants them to live.
Often, at the end of the club, the children will put on a presentation to their
parents and others in the community, to share what they have learnt.
In
August we take the children away in groups to stay at a boarding school for five
days. These Bible Holiday Camps are a real highlight of the year for these
children, and like the clubs, provide an opportunity for them to understand that
they are special. Coming from Kibera, it's very easy for these children to view
themselves as second or third-class citizens - they are looked down upon by many
within Kenyan society. But we know that God doesn't view them that way, that
they are special to Him - He even died for them. By taking them out of Kibera,
giving them a holiday and opportunities to swim, play football on a grass pitch,
and sleep in a real bed we are valuing them for who they are, helping to show
them they are special and that God does love them.
