"My children often slept hungry"

Judith spent her days looking for any work that would pay enough to feed her children that evening.

There was rarely cash left over and the idea of saving enough to start a business seemed impossible. Invited to Turning Point by a friend, Judith joined four mothers to form Hope group and after some training they were ready to receive their first interest-free loans of Ksh2,000 ($25) each.

Judith used her loan to buy a small stock of bread and milk. A wise choice of location ensured that many people passed her every day. Soon Judith started thinking of how she could expand her business further. After just four months all five mums in Hope group had completed their repayments and were ready to graduate to a higher loan. Judith, full of confidence from her success so far, added some more products to her stock; soap for mums washing clothes and sweets for kids passing by on their way to school.

"Now, I can't remember the last time I sent my kids to bed hungry"

Though it is hard work, she has found confidence in both herself and her business and believes it will continue to grow.

This story is an example of how TPFP is restoring hope to some of the poorest families, and enabling them to climb the first steps on the ladder out of poverty.
