We have just completed an in-depth evaluation of the Turning Point Finance Programme, offering microfinance to the very poorest in Kibera. We are excited to share what we have learnt so far so we are making the PDF available right here!
In February, 4 year old Mary joined our Mashimoni Project. We took her in after lots of local community members pleaded
with us to help her. Her mother is a drunkard and Mary is frequently beaten; some neighbours even claim they saw the
mother physically throw her out of the window once. Often Mary is locked out of the house for the whole day with nowhere
to go and no food or water. She's severely malnourished and her health is in very bad condition. Perhaps what is saddest
of all, is that she has missed out on crucial early childhood development and, after watching her in the playground
during break time, it is soon apparent she has no idea how to interact with other children.
Luckily, now she's at Turning Point, all of that will change. The staff will work with her family, trying to address
the problems at home, she'll get breakfast and lunch through the Feeding Programme. Most importantly, she'll be given
lots of love and attention by everyone at the projects and she'll learn all about the love that Jesus has for her too.
