The HotS Report from a visiting pray-er

My name is Gathoni Mutua and I am a university student. Last Monday I was graciously invited to join Turning Point for a few hours as part of the healing ministry.
It has been said about surrender that “the strongest position you can be in is on your knees”. I saw this practically at work. After introductions and a slight tour of the Turning Point offices in Kibera three of us sat down in one of the children’s classrooms on the grounds and did a short briefing. As I had expected we were going to pray before heading out to pray for others, but as if to remind me, personally, that this was going to be God’s work and that I was completely unworthy, one of the leaders said that we were going to do some confession. Trying my best not to look alarmed at how casual she looked when saying this, I found myself somewhat relieved. Although time did not allow me to share, I was still deeply impacted by how much faith and power there was in the hearts of those leading me, oddly enough because of the vulnerability that they had in their surrender to God. When we started heading to the main walkway where we were going to set up our healing stand, I realized that I really wasn’t nervous. I was confident in the fact that even if I messed everything up, that God had so much control in the lives of my leaders that it wouldn’t matter what I did. With that confidence I stepped out onto one of the main walkways where we set up our stools and our “Uponyaji wa bure” sign and sat down.
As is natural many people will walk right past you in their hurry or in the distrust of what this group could possibly be doing. On the other hand, there are always the few who don’t have much else to do, and are curious enough to sit down and find out who these people greeting them off the side of the road are.
For the most part, they would sit and having been divided up into 2 teams of 2, my partner would graciously greet the guest and break the ice as best she could before beginning. After receiving a bit more warmth from the guest she would describe what it is that we had set out to do and a little of what Turning Point does, after which she would ask if they wanted prayers. Some only listened to her introduction and found a way to leave without prayers, but others opened up and asked for prayer.
Although I was expecting many people to be lining up waiting to be prayed for, as I was told usually happened, I was even amazed at the few that came. From our side it seems so obvious that a person would sit, tell us their requests and we would pray in faith, have them healed and they go on their way, but it’s different from their view. As a guest, it is hard to open up to total strangers and tell them what you’re struggling with, whether in your family or physically; so when one lady came to us eagerly, I knew there had to be something God wanted from this encounter. She described her family situation, hurts of her past and broke down in tears as she recalled all this. Besides the power that is unleashed when we surrender to God, I also realized that that day I was hoping to see instant healings and miraculous things. But I realized that the same power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead that heals people, is the same power that sets them free from all kinds of bondage (not just physical, but emotion and spiritual too). I learned that God is not only willing to heal our bodies but He is eager to make us entirely whole. Thank you Turning Point!
